Play things for Playing House - Letter H

Hobby - something that one likes to do or study in one's spare time; favorite pastime or avocation.  If your particular hobby requires any kind of equipment, you need a place to store it. If you are lucky, you have a room.  If not, you have to find space somewhere in your home to store the scissors, glue, paper, ribbon, - I could go on and on - just it depends on your hobby.
One of my favorite play things in my home is a green cabinet, inherited from my mother-in-law, which she used for her sewing supplies (her hobby for many, many years).  The cabinet came from my father-in-law's office - an old fashion filing cabinet - discarded for being out of date.  They painted it green; a color that is now trendy.  The cabinet holds my supplies for my hobbies - such as they are.  I have thought about repainting the cabinet, but the color is now current again and everyone likes "chippy" furniture.  It is placed in my 2nd guest room where the sewing machine is set up all the time.

When the cabinet became ours, I cleaned it out some, but I left the spools and spools of thread, ribbons, rickrack, lace, and implements of sewing.  I still had enough room in several drawers for what I wanted to store.
I must admit before taking the photos for this blog, I organized the drawers and cleaned. (Found a few items I had forgotten about!)

My toes managed to photo bomb.

My bead drawer - baby food jars hold LOTS of beads.
My favorite craft is to make/embellish gift tags.  I have stored ribbons, stickers, paper tags, glue, flowers, buttons in the drawers.  I can sew, thanks to my mother-in-law, who tried to teach me to make a dress using a pattern.  I never got the hang of patterns.  As they say, if you can sew a straight line, you can do this---that's me - straight line crafts.  My ventures into sewing have included diaper bags, heart pin cushions, burp diapers, curtains, and garment repairs.  This past Christmas I combined creating a gift paper tag and sewing.  I sewed a paper design of a Ball jar on top of Christmas scrapbook paper.

As for the small cabinets sitting on top of my hobby cabinet, they will be discussed in some future posts.

Until the next letter...

Play Things for Playing House - Letter G

You know when you were in school and gazing at the blackboard with the alphabet cards tacked above in a line, there wasn't that much space between the letters - capital G, lower case g - capital H, lower case h, etc.   It seems as though I am having more space (time) between my letters of my playing things.  I'm having trouble getting into the flow of the alphabet.  BUT, do have today's post on G.

GARAGE sale chair (a little stretch)

My first purchase in a garage sale in Dallas was this $5.00 chair.  The sweet little chair has been with me 42 years now, undergone multiple recoverings of the seat.  I have to admit I've not ever been much of a devotee of garage sales.  In the last 11 years, we've lived in neighborhoods that do not allow garage sales.

GRAPHIC PRINTS
I have shown some of these to you in an earlier post, but I'm adding by showing the other prints we love in our home.

Donna Howell Sickles - I love you - your artwork makes me HAPPY.  We can only afford your prints.
When in Santa Fe, we visit the galleries to see your latest.

AND while we're talking about chairs - well we were - this chair in the entry also came from an estate sale.
It was the owner's father's chair he used in his dental office.

Roped Out - purchased in Santa Fe; sorry can't remember the artist's name and I can't read the signature!

Red Shoe Lily by Linda Carter Holman; displayed in our office

The Three Graces by Linda Carter Holman
also in our office.  The old Royal typewriter was an alley trash find.  I need "something"
to place it on in this room.
Colors are so vivid!

Chuckwagon Coffee by Linda Carter Holman, above our roll top desk
in our office.

See my box to the left - it has cowboys and cowgirls too; a purchase in Santa Fe

Until the next letter....

Updating Home Tour

It took me all summer to get to this day, but I finally have some shots of the living room, kitchen and entry.  I'm using my new camera, but for me lighting is always tricky.  Since our living area faces south, and we have a significant patio roof line to shield from the southwest sun, it hard to get it right with the camera.

What IS my style?  Hmmmmm, a little traditional, a little farmhouse, a little antique, a few quirky items thrown in, topped off with cowboy inspired artwork because, heh!, we live in Texas!  It's warm, colorful, and our taste.  Enjoy.

If you have any questions anything you see in the photos, just contact me.

Flowers of Alaska - part 3

OK, I finishing up with the 3 posts on flowers seen in Alaska.  I will move on to the letter "G" in next post.

Taken at the port area of Wrangell.

love the purple petunias, but don't know what that adorable lavender flower is

Lavender in front of the Craigdarroch Castle, Victoria, Vancouver Island.
Victoria is a city with beautiful yards and beautiful lush baskets hanging from lamp posts.  The people and City take great pride in the flowers.  Just couldn't get good shots through the window of a "speeding" tour bus.  Move along folks, move along....

I will leave you with another non-flower photograph.  Wonderful blue colors!!
Hubbard Glacier.  Our "small" (640 passengers) ship was able to get this close.
Unlike the Mendenhall Glacier, the Hubbard is not receding.

I don't have a Glacier among my play things so I'll have to look around the house for a interesting "G" item.

Flowers from Alaskan Cruise

F is for Flowers.

Just could not resist photographing the flowers while in port in several cities of Alaska.  It must the the air or the WATER that keeps them so vivid.   At this time of year in Dallas metroplex, flowers are hanging on barely due to the heat.
